IC 1396 is 2,400 light years from earth (you would have to travel at the speed of light for 2,400 years to get to it).
Another way of thinking about it is that, what is actually happening in this nebula as we speak, will take 2,400 light years to show up to us on earth.
If you look closely, you can see a bright star toward the top right of the picture. This is "Mu Cephei" -- one of the biggest stars that we know of-- 2.4 billion miles across (and roughly 1,500 times the size of our sun).
